As ever the Three Choirs Festival remains the highpoint of any choral festival year and this year it is the turn of Hereford Cathedral. The tour includes cathedral concerts on two evenings and additional concerts during the day on Saturday.  Also there will be a visit to Elgar’s birthplace and either Madresfield Hall (tbc) or alternatively Berrington Hall.  Staying at the four star Abbey Hotel, Great Malvern which is an easy drive (21 miles/45 minutes) to Hereford.  Early dining on both concert evenings will be at the Green Dragon Hotel Hereford adjacent to the cathedral. The restaurant is under new ownership and provided some excellent meals last year and a very comfortable lounge area to perhaps enjoy lunch or tea during the day whilst in Hereford.

An outline of the performances and itinerary is as follows  – the daytime concerts are confirmed but precise programme content still has to be updated.

Thursday 28 July:  Check into the Abbey Hotel Great Malvern from 3 pm before meeting guests for dinner in the evening.

Friday 29 July:  There will be a morning visit to The Elgar Birthplace Museum and country cottage which gives a fascinating insight in to the life and music, family and friends, development and inspirations of Sir Edward Elgar.  Still to be confirmed -  it is hoped there will be a visit to Madresfield Court  – the inspiration for Evelyn Waugh and Brideshead Revisited  -  the alternative would be a visit to Berrington Hall, a neoclassical country house designed by Henry Holland in 1778-81.  Then to Hereford – time to relax before an early three course dinner at the Green Dragon Hotel before attending the evening cathedral concert -  returning then to Malvern around 10.45 pm.

The programme:  Bach/Stravinsky Variations on ‘Von Himmel hoch’Finzi Dies natalisBritten The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra , Poulenc Stabat mater

Saturday 30 July Leisurely departure for Hereford to enjoy a morning concert in Holy Trinity Church Hereford given by Valkia, a Finnish male voice Chamber Choir.  Time in Hereford to find lunch before a concert in the cathedral performed by The National Youth Orchestra of Wales.  It may be possible to attend choral evensong in the cathedral before early dining in the hotel.  This evening's cathedral concert is the grand finale of the festival:

Elgar’s  The Dream of Gerontius

Return to the hotel in Malvern about 10.45 pm.

Sunday 31 July:  Please check out of your rooms by 11 am for departure.

Please note – there are still details to be confirmed for the daytime programme and we may have to make changes if required or if, in our view, an alternative would enhance the tour.
