The hugely popular Welsh National Opera, when performing in their home city, require booking months in advance to secure the best seats and we are delighted to offer two notable operas performed by this world-class company. The Marriage of Figaro has been described as one of the most perfect operas, containing some of Mozart’s best-loved music with a cast to include international sopranos Rebecca Evans and Rosemary Joshua and the following night, The Elixir of Love, (L’Elisir d’Amore) when the magic of Donizetti telling a delicious frothy tale of glamorous characters and romance on the sunny Italian Riviera. Camilla Roberts as Adina with the UK debut of American tenor Dimitri Pittas.
This short break is from the spacious and comfortable 4-star Mercure Holland House Hotel in the centre of Cardiff. There will be a “behind the scenes” tour of the new Millennium centre, the permanent home for the WNO – a chance to go back stage and view this state of the art performing arts venue part of Cardiff Bay’s new dynamic water front. A covered boat cruise around Cardiff Bay and a guided tour of Cardiff Castle.
Wednesday 11 February Check into the hotel before a welcome drink and early evening buffet dinner before attending the performance of Marriage of Figaro.
Thursday 12 February The coach will take you to Cardiff Bay for a guided tour of the Millennium Centre and then there is the opportunity to go “next door” and visit the recently opened National Assembly for Wales, another unique landmark building in this exciting newly developed area. There are numerous places to find lunch around Mermaid Quay before a boat cruise around Cardiff Bay. Return to the hotel early afternoon before dinner and then the evening performance of The Elixir of Love.
Friday 13 February Check out of your rooms before making your way to Cardiff Castle (ten minute walk form the hotel) for a guided tour. The combination of the Marquess of Bute’s open chequebook and the remarkable gothic revival fantasy created by his great friend William Burgess throughout the building makes this one of the most extraordinary and fascinating castles to visit. The tour ends here but you may wish to find lunch or visit the Impressionist Art Collection within the National Museum for Wales adjacent to the Castle before returning to the hotel for departure.
