Join this tour on the evening of Tuesday 16 May staying one night with dinner at the luxury Chilston Park Hotel, Lenham, Kent. This enables an early start on Wednesday morning for the Eurotunnel through to Calais. Cars can be left at the hotel for the duration and there is a nearby train station at Lenham.
Wednesday 17 May – From Calais there will be a stop en-route to visit Abbaye de Valloires where the gardens, designed by Gilles Clément have superb flowering shrubs at this time of year. Lunch can be found at the café in the garden before continuing to Amiens and checking into the 4 star Mercure Cathedral Hotel. This hotel in the centre of the city adjacent to the glorious 13th century cathedral which can be visited in the late afternoon also perhaps the Jardin des Plantes d’Amiens Dinner this evening will be in a local restaurant.
Thursday 18 May: Heading north from Amiens to visit Le Jardin de Marie-Ange. This two acre garden is well known for its diverse collection of plants. Continue then to Jardin de Sericourt in Picardy. This remarkable garden plays with form and flow to create surprising spaces and enchanting rooms with bold architectural topiary and structure. Lunch will be provided. In the afternoon a garden visit to Jardins de Maizicourt, a superb garden surrounding a small eighteenth century chateau that has been created and considerably expanded over the years by the owner Catherine Guévenoux. It is a wonderful garden with terraces, allees, topiary, potager, orchard and an orangery overflowing with wonderful planting and beautiful specimen shrubs and trees. Return to Amiens for dinner in a local restaurant.
Friday 19 May: Courson - Les Journées des Plantes, has a new home in the glorious surroundings of the Domaine de Chantilly north of Paris. This unique plant fair, with over 200 nurserymen, gardeners and professionals displaying superb plants from all over France, is a chance to discover many unusual and new varieties and a massive temptation purchase. Plenty of space in the coach for transporting back home! You can also take a break from the show to visit the superb Chateau de Chantilly, one of the jewels in the crown of France's cultural heritage, housing treasures and art from the collection of Prince Henri d’Orleans Duke of Aumale. While adjacent are the magnificent 18th century Great Stables, built for Louis-Henri de Bourbon, 7th Prince of Condé, the largest in Europe a veritable horses’ palace and contains the Museum of the Horse. Return to Amiens – dine independently or with others in one of the many restaurants near the hotel.
Saturday 20 May: Depart to return to Calais. En-route a visit to the most exquisite garden – a real gem. Jardin des Lianes where the owners have shared a passion and huge enthusiasm for collecting unusual trees, shrubs and perennials mainly chosen for their foliage, scent and colour. Lunch will be in a little hotel in the village before continuing to Calais and the Eurotunnel. The coach intends to be at Ashford Station for 3.30 for those requiring the train and Chilston Park 4 pm to collect cars.
