inventor Lord Armstrong
- the extraordinary
Victorian house
and gardens considered
a wonder of its
age. The Macdonald
Linden Hall Hotel
is located seven
miles north west
of Morpeth and set
in 450 acres of
park and woodland
with stunning views
of the Northumberland
countryside.
Tuesday 22 July:
Arrive and check
into the hotel before
the welcome drink
and introduction
to the tour.
Wednesday 23
July: Depart
north by executive
coach by the scenic
coastal route to
Holy Island. Famous
both for its medieval
religious heritage
and also its more
recent picturesque
16th century castle
transformed by Lutyens
and with a charming
Gertrude Jekyll
walled-garden. A
tidal island, accessed
by a paved causeway
covered by the North
Sea twice in 24
hours - your visit
is timed to allow
maximum time on
the island and to
visit Lindsifarne
Castle. Lunch can
be found in the
many small cafes
and pubs in the
village. Returning
south to visit the
garden Howick Hall.
This garden is primarily
the work of Charles,
5th Earl Grey, with
his wife and their
daughter Lady Mary
Howick and is a
delight for garden
lovers with extensive
grounds and a wide
variety of plants.
Return to the hotel
for dinner.
Thursday 24 July:
Depart by coach
for Alnwick Garden
- The inspiration
of the Duchess of
Northumberland and
designed by the
world renowned Jacques
Wirtz this spectacular
water garden continues
to develop with
the recent opening
of the Poison Garden,
Bamboo Labyrinth
and the Treehouse.
It is hoped that
your garden visit
will be conducted
by Ian August who
as Garden Project
Director represents
the Duchess in garden
matters and is involved
with the design
and development
programme alternatively
the expert garden
guides will take
you around. Lunch
can be purchased
in the recently
opened Pavilion
or Treehouse Café
followed by an introduction
to the Castle before
your visit in the
afternoon. Return
to the hotel for
dinner. Friday 25
July:- Check out
of the hotel before
departing by executive
coach for the private
visit to Cragside.
The revolutionary
home of Lord Armstrong,
Victorian inventor
and landscape genius,
was a wonder of
its age. Built on
a rocky crag high
above the Debdon
Burn, Cragside is
crammed with ingenious
gadgets and was
the first house
in the world to
be lit electrically
and has a garden
of breathtaking
drama whatever the
season. Lunch can
be found here after
visiting the house
and garden. You
will then continue
to the delightful
small garden at
Bide-A-Wee set in
a discussed quarry
covering around
2 acres - it was
designed by Mark
Robson and has many
colourful plantings.
Return to the hotel
mid-afternoon. (Should
you wish to be dropped
at the hotel before
this final garden
a stop can be made
en-route). The coach
will however drop
at Morpeth station
for these who would
like this option
