Manchester is internationally recognised as one of Europe’s leading cities blending its cultural heritage and the prosperity of its industrial past, with the new and very exciting contemporary buildings. Staying at the luxury 4-star Macdonald Manchester Hotel, ideally located next to Piccadilly Station, this short break weekend will include tickets for a superb concert given by The Halle
Orchestra in Bridgewater Hall, marking the 150th celebrations of Britain’s longest established symphony orchestra. There will be a guided tour of the Bridgwater Hall, visits to City Art Gallery, The Royal Exchange, a cruise through the city to Salford Quays before enjoying the Lowry Centre and Imperial War Museum of the North. The tour starts with a panoramic coach tour of the city with a knowledgeable guide and time allowed to discover other historic buildings.
Friday 14 November Arrive in time for a welcome reception and to meet you local guide before dinner.
Saturday 15 November The coach will take you through the city before visiting the Bridgewater Hall. This architectural stunning building in the heart of the city is Manchester's most prestigious international concert hall – the guided tour will give you an insight into this engineering triumph and extraordinary lengths that the architects went to achieve this. Then will follow a short walk to the award-winning City Art Gallery with its vast art collection dating back to the 17thC, the recently reopened John Rylands Library, a gothic masterpiece containing priceless books and the Great Hall of Manchester’s Cotton Exchange which houses The Royal Exchange Theatre. There will be an opportunity to find lunch before returning to the hotel independently.
After an early dinner the coach will take you back to the Bridgwater Hall for the evening concert. Founded 1858 by Sir Charles Halle the orchestra is renowned worldwide and although the final programme details have still be released there will be major works by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev and the performance will conducted by one of Russia’s foremost conductors Alexander Lazarev.
Sunday 16 November The morning starts with a boat cruise on the Manchester Ship Canal before alighting at Salford Quays to tour the stunning waterfront development. The Lowry, a unique and dynamic building rising form the regenerated docklands
house the largest collection of works by LS Lowry. Time to explore the building and there will be an introduction to the galleries and art collection. Over the canal you can visit the equally dramatic Imperial War Museum North. Lunch can be purchased or tables booked for the panoramic restaurant in the Lowry before the coach returns you to the hotel at approximately 1600 hrs for departure.
