TRAFALGAR WEEKEND
TRAFALGAR DINNER IN THE PAINTED HALL AT GREENWICH
FROM THE DE VERE CAVENDISH HOTEL, ST JAMES’S
20 – 22 OCTOBER 2006 (2 nights)

This tour is not available see current tours

We have secured a limited number of tickets to the Trafalgar dinner in the Painted Hall at Greenwich or, for those who prefer a musical celebration, we have a number of top price tickets to the Trafalgar Concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

Friday 20 October
Check into the De Vere Cavendish Hotel in time for the welcome reception at 1900. Here you can meet your fellow guests, and your guide will introduce the events for your stay. Dinner tonight is optional, see the price box below.

Saturday 21 October
We have arranged a visit to the Mall Galleries this morning, where there is an exhibition by the Royal Society of Marine Artists. Their president, Geoff Hunt, is to give us a private guided tour (subject to his availability). He has made his name as a painter of the ships of Nelson's navy and is also the illustrator of Patrick O'Brian's books. There will be some Nelson and Trafalgar elements to this exhibition. You will be welcomed with coffee and a talk before your private tour. Back to your hotel in time to find lunch and you are free for the afternoon to allow time to prepare for the evening.

The Painted Hall in the Old Royal Naval College is one of the most important venues in the world for the commemoration of Lord Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar. The event is a rich blend of tradition, fine food and music, with ceremonies such as the Parade of the Baron of Beef, Ships of the Line, and a short speech to precede the toast to Nelson 'The Immortal Memory'. The evening finishes with the singing of sea shanties, and the 'Sunset Ceremony' which sees the lowering of the White Ensign.

The tradition of holding a Trafalgar Night Dinner started soon after the battle in 1805, and the first in Greenwich took place in 1835 at the Trafalgar Tavern. It is not known when the Old Royal Naval College held its first Trafalgar Night Dinner although it was probably soon after the Navy's arrival in 1937. The most one of note was the 150th Anniversary in 1955 when Lord Mountbatten of Burma toasted the Immortal Memory in the presence of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The Greenwich Foundation has continued the tradition of holding the Trafalgar Dinner in the Painted Hall. Dress code for this event is Black Tie, beginning at 1900 and ending with carriages (or in our case a coach!) at midnight.
