Join
us at the Internationally renowned Three Choirs Festival, this
year to be based in Gloucester and celebrating the 150th birthday
of Sir Edward Elgar. We have incorporated a mornings touring in
the Forest of Dean together with some outstanding concerts in the
great cathedral of Gloucester.
Wednesday 08 August
Arrive at your hotel in time for a welcome drink followed by dinner.
Thursday 09 August
A leisurely start today as there is a busy programme this afternoon
and evening and you will not return to the hotel until after
the final concert of the day. So depart for Gloucester at 1030
and drive to the Maritime Centre where you can find coffee and
enjoy a visit at your own speed. At 1230 you will board our privately
chartered boat for an hour and a half’s lunch cruise on
board ‘King Arthur’ while you travel along the Gloucester & Sharpness
Canal.
Upon your return to the Merchants Quay you will be taken to the
Cathedral where you will take your seats for the start of our programme
at the 3 Choirs Festival. The first concert includes Vaughan Williams
The Lark Ascending and Elgar’s Enigma
Variations performed
by the Philharmonia, one of Europe’s finest orchestras. After
this performance we are making arrangements for a booked area at
the Three Choirs Festival Club, just 2 minutes from the Cathedral,
where you will be able to relax and find an early light supper
(further details will be available to those who book) You will
then take your top price seats for the evening concert and enjoy
returning to the Cathedral for the Monteverdi Vespers,
Ex Cathedra and His
Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts. Finally return to your
hotel at approximately 2230.
Friday
10 August
After a leisurely breakfast you will depart by coach for a morning’s
touring. Drive through the little known world of the Forest of
Dean and hear about its customs and characters. There will be a
visit to the buildings associated with the early life of the composer
and teacher Herbert Howells, who is primarily known for his church
music, and who was a contemporary and companion of Ivor Novello,
Ivor Gurney and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Stop for coffee at the
Speech House Hotel which was build in 1676 as a hunting lodge for
Charles II, and where the Verderer’s Court of Attachments
is still held every 40 days. At the end of the morning you will
arrive in Gloucester where you can find lunch and join an optional
city walk with your guide before the afternoon concert.
Our final
concert of this tour is performed by the Three Cathedral Choirs
and includes Bach’s Cantato no 51 “Jauchzet
Gott”,
Vivaldi’s Magnificat and Vivaldi’s Gloria
